    Neurological Physiotherapy

Have you recently been discharged from the hospital after a neurological injury and want to maximize your recovery?

Have you been given a life-changing neurological diagnosis and want the support and guidance to optimize your mobility?

Do you have any activities in your daily life that are becoming challenging and want to improve your strength or function to maintain your independence?

Whether you have a new injury or diagnosis you are learning to adapt to, or have been living with a neurological condition for years, we can help you maximize your mobility and help you reach your specific goals.

We use our training in Neurodevelopmental Technique (NDT) and Bobath models to create a framework for our approach when working with individuals with neurological conditions. Treatment is focused on functional movements and tailored to individual goals. Our nervous system can adapt and change when given the optimal amount of stimulus and it this principle of neuroplasticity that can allow for meaningful change. Our approach to neurological rehab is guided by one of our favourite quotes from an NDT course that inspires us to remember that change is possible when clients are challenged appropriately:

"Any BRAIN can CHANGE at any TIME and at any AGE".

Conditions that could benefit from our neurological physiotherapy services:

    • Stroke
    • Acquired or traumatic brain injury
    • Spinal cord injury
    • Parkinson's Disease
    • Multiple Sclerosis
    • Cerebral Palsy
    • Ataxia
    • Any neurological diagnoses

    Vestibular rehab

When you roll over in bed, does the room spin for a few moments?

Do you feel dizzy in certain environments?

Do you constantly feel like you are fighting your balance?

Individuals with vestibular disorders often experience problems with dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbances, lightheadedness, headaches, and/or imbalance. These problems can often significantly impact someone's quality of life. When dealing with a vestibular issue, it is common for people to withdraw from activities and social situations in order to avoid movements or situations that can trigger symptoms. This can lead to feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety.

Vestibular rehabilitation involves a comprehensive assessment that can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

    Treatment may involve:

    • education
    • repositioning maneuvres
    • balance training
    • exercises to get your visual and vestibular system working better together.

Conditions that we treat, but are not limited to:

    • BPPV  aka " loose crystals in the ear"
    • Vestibular Neuritis
    • Labyrinthitis
    • Unilateral Vestibular Loss (UVL)
    • Bilateral Vestibular Loss (BVL)
    • Post concussion dizziness
    • Visual-vestibular mismatch
    • Imbalance

    Persistent Pain Management

The more we learn about pain, the more we understand the complexity of our pain system. Pain goes beyond the tissue injury and is a complex process involving the brain and the nervous system. This explains why solely treating your area of pain with a variety of different methods may not be getting you lasting results. Often, to treat persistent pain, the nervous system needs to be addressed.

Our services involve a holistic assessment of your current pain condition, and will treatment may involve the following:

    •  techniques to de-sensitive the nervous system
    • goal-setting
    • graded approach to exercise or movements that are currently causing you pain
    • pain education

    Concussion management

Did you know that you can have a concussion without losing consciousness?

Did you know that you can get a concussion without hitting your head?

Management in concussions has been a rapidly evolving body of research in recent years which has helped improve access to health care resources and improved patient outcomes. Initially it was believed that rest was the best thing for someone after a concussion. The problem is people often stay resting longer than they should and get "stuck in rest", meaning they don't know how to return to activities without exacerbating their symptoms. More research is supporting the idea of a guided and gradual return to activity. Every concussion is unique and it is helpful to seek support from a health care professional and team to help guide the rehabilitation process.

Concussions are a diffuse brain injury and therefore can affect multiple brain functions.

    Signs and Symptoms

    • difficulty thinking clearly,  difficulty concentrating and remembering new information
    • headache, nausea, balance problems, dizziness, blurred vision, sensitivity to noise and/or light
    • feeling more emotional, irritability, sadness, anxiety
    • sleep disturbances, trouble falling asleep

    Treatment may include:

    • education
    • cervical spine rehabilitation and manual therapy
    • aerobic exercise and graded return to activity
    • vision and vestibular rehab
    • activity pacing and planning
    • involvement of a multidisciplinary team

    Dry needling & Acupuncture

Acupuncture: is a form of dry needling that stimulates the balance and flow of Qi energy that in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)  is considered essential to health. Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins- the body's natural pain relieving neurohormones through the insertion of monofilament needles into specific anatomical points (known as acupuncture points) to encourage natural healing.

Pivotal Movement offers a form of acupuncture called Anatomical Acupuncture. This was originated by Dr. Joseph Wong in the mid 1970s and bridges the gap between TCM and Western medicine. The acupoints are chosen based on anatomy and physiology. Therapeutic effects may include pain relief, improved function, increased energy and improved mood.

Dry needling: Functional dry needling is a form of intramuscular stimulation (IMS). It  involves inserting a tiny monofilament needle in a muscle or muscles in order to release shorted bands of muscles and decrease trigger point activity. This can act as a reset for the nervous system and can help resolve pain, muscle tension and promote healing.

Functional dry needling and acupuncture are often applied as a useful adjunct to therapy sessions, used in combination with manual therapy, functional movement retraining and exercise prescription to help achieve your rehabilitation goals.

    Orthopaedic Physiotherapy

Orthopaedic physiotherapy involves the assessment and treatment of the musculoskeletal system (which is made up of muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and fascia) that has been subject to injury or trauma. This includes sprains, strains, post fracture, post surgery and repetitive injuries.

    Treatment may include:

    • education
    • manual therapy: soft tissue release, mobilizations and self mobilization techniques
    • movement retraining
    • gait retraining
    • exercise prescription
    • taping for support or facilitation
    • functional dry needling/acupuncture
